Scholarship Awards Brunch 2013
By Mijune Pak
Sunday May 5 was the BC Chefs’ Association’s annual Scholarship Awards Brunch at the Executive Plaza Hotel Conference Centre in Coquitlam, BC. Together, Chef Edgar Rahal, President of the BCCA, and various company representatives presented 9 scholarships to well deserved high school students furthering their careers in the culinary arts.
During the brunch, Chef Rahal and guest speaker Jeffery Young (Chef/Director of Food and Beverage for Coast Hotels) made reference to the majority of chefs finding their way in the
industry by starting as a dish washer. Both Rahal and Young could relate and looking around the room so could many other chefs as I noticed a nodding consensus. However I’m happy to say that things have changed, and the idea of being a chef isn’t something people necessarily fall upon nowadays or do as a last resort. Being a chef has become a desired profession and one we at the BC Chefs’ Association encourage at a young age.
On behalf of the BC Chefs’ Association it is with our great honour to award these talented young students who have found their passion in the culinary world. Being a chef is no easy task, and just like all success it comes with hard work. These students have proven their dedication and it is our job to guide, mentor and motivate them to succeed. These students are our future chefs and we are proud to support them.
