British Columbia 150 Years

British Columbia is honoring the past and celebrating the future in 2008.

In 2008, British Columbia is celebrating a milestone: 150 years since its founding as a Crown colony. From the rich traditions of BC’s First Nations and Aboriginal people, reaching back thousands of years, to Gold Rush fever and the founding of the Crown Colony…on into a new century of achievement and innovation, BC has a fascinating story to tell.

2008 is not only a special year for the province, but also for the British Columbia Chefs’ Association who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary.

It was not until the turn of the century that food service produced by professional chefs gained an economic momentum. The opening of the great “railway” hotels and the onset of the First World War created a hub of activity and wealth on the West Coast of North America.

The training of professional chefs and cooks started after World War II when the Vancouver Community School opened in 1965. Until then, cooks and chefs as well as other food service professionals like Maitre d’s and Sommeliers came from Europe and in smaller numbers from the Far East and the United States.

In July of 1956, a small group of inspired chefs met at the Lougheed Hotel in Burnaby and they decided to organize an association of professional chefs. These included Xavier Hetzman, Wally Shaw, Eddie Gibstroff, Gottlieb Dambach, and Eugene Veronneau.

Originally the organization was called the Association of Chefs de Cuisine of BC and its charter was granted on February 27, 1959. In June 1967 changes to the constitution and bylaws were adopted and the name was altered to the British Columbia Chefs’ Association. The Founding President, Chef Wally Shaw led the organization from 1958 to 1961.

The BC Chefs’ Association will be honoring its past and celebrating the future in 2008.

Please join us in the many celebrations we have planned for this year by checking the website on a regular basis.
